Wired or Wi-Fi? It is the first question almost every camera shopper asks, and the honest answer depends on three things: how much work you want to do at setup, how dependable the system needs to be, and how many cameras you plan to run. This guide compares the two side by side and points to Lorex options for each.
The short answer
Choose wired (PoE) for the most dependable, always-recording coverage across a whole property. Choose Wi-Fi for a few cameras that are quick to place, or when running cable is not practical. Cannot decide? Lorex Fusion lets one recorder handle both.
How each type works
Wired cameras connect to a network video recorder (NVR) with an Ethernet cable. Most use Power over Ethernet (PoE), so that single cable carries both power and video. The recorder saves footage to its own hard drive, so recording does not depend on your Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi cameras join your home network wirelessly and are managed in the Lorex app. Many are stand-alone, meaning they need no recorder and save clips to a microSD card inside the camera. Power comes from a wall adapter, or from a rechargeable battery on wire-free models.
Wired vs Wi-Fi at a glance
| Wired (PoE) | Wi-Fi | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Through the Ethernet cable from the recorder | Wall adapter, or a rechargeable battery on wire-free models |
| Connection | Ethernet cable to the recorder | Your Wi-Fi network |
| Where footage is stored | The recorder's hard drive (expandable on many models) | A microSD card in the camera on many models |
| Setup | More planning, since a cable must reach each camera | Quick: mount, power on, pair in the app |
| Best for | Whole-property coverage, driveways and perimeters, 24/7 recording | Single doors, rooms, sheds, gates and anywhere cable is hard to run |
| Keep in mind | Network cable is often sold separately | Signal strength matters, and batteries need recharging |
Choose wired if you want
- Continuous recording across several cameras on one recorder
- A system that keeps recording to the recorder even when your internet drops (you still need internet to watch remotely)
- Room to grow, with 8, 16 or 32 camera channels to choose from
- A permanent setup for a house, a shop or an office
Choose Wi-Fi if you want
- A fast start with one or two cameras and no recorder
- Coverage for a gate, shed or garage where running cable is not practical
- An indoor camera for a living room, entry or home office
- A flexible setup you can move around
One practical note on distance: an Ethernet run is limited to about 100 m (328 ft). If a wired camera sits farther away than that, a PoE repeater extends the reach. You will find them in our PoE switches and extenders.

Do Wi-Fi cameras need a recorder?
Not always. Several Lorex Wi-Fi cameras are stand-alone: you view and manage them in the Lorex app and they save clips to a microSD card. A recorder is only needed for wired cameras and for Fusion setups.
Is wired always better than Wi-Fi?
Not always. Wired is usually the better fit for a full-property system because it records to a dedicated recorder. Wi-Fi is the better fit when you need one or two cameras quickly, or cannot run cable to a spot.
Can I use both in one system?
Yes. Lorex Fusion recorders accept both wired cameras and Fusion Wi-Fi cameras on the same recorder. See our Fusion guide.
What about storage for Wi-Fi cameras?
Many Wi-Fi models record to a microSD card. A surveillance-grade card is built for constant recording; see our storage collection.
